The British Furniture Confederation (BFC) of which the BCFA is a lead partner has long campaigned for a full revision of the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire)(Safety) Regulations 1988 as amended (FFFSR). The BFC was concerned that the latest proposals for changes to the standards from BEIS, would not deliver the stated aims of reducing the use of fire retardant chemicals, whilst maintaining current safety levels and so has drafted its own proposals for updating the FFFSR. Following consultations with other stakeholders the proposals have now been presented to Margot James MP, the Minister in charge of consumer affairs and her team at BEIS
Whilst the FFSR are concerned with consumer products, it is very likely that elements of revisions to the standards and testing in the use of fire retardents, will also be applied to the commercial sector in the future.
The BFC press release and draft proposals are both available to download below and we will keep you informed of how these proposals are received by BEIS.
