On the 24th January six representatives of BCFA members took part in a day of meetings with third year students from the Product and Furniture Design BA course at the Sheffield Institute of Art. Thirty-eight students from SIA were given the opportunity to attend a series of half hour 121 meetings with members to review their portfolios and to discuss their career options within the furniture and furnishing sector. The aim of the BCFA clinics is to ensure that the best product design students are encouraged and able to find employment within the furniture and furnishings sector. The meetings were hugely popular with the students, with many students spending all day in meetings with different members and taking the opportunity to hear how product design works within the different BCFA members. The BCFA team were equally impressed with the high quality of the students and their portfolios at SIA, and several design projects are likely to come out of the meetings.
The BCFA members were:
- Steve Parkinson Product Designer at Gresham Office Furniture
- Jason Brown, Director of Design at Knightsbridge Furniture
- Stephen Ward, Group Managing Director of Hypnos
- Darren Clanford, Creative Director at Johnson Tiles
- James Bassant, Design Director Astro Lighting
- Rob Speck, Engineering Manager at Astro Lighting
The six BCFA members were supported by Dr Llyn Jones of Llyn Jones Associates who is a specialist furniture head-hunter and careers advisor and previously the Head of the National School of Furniture at Bucks New University.
A huge thank you to the seven BCFA members who took time out from their busy schedules to take part in this event.
The next BCFA Student Clinics will take place at Rycotewood Furniture Centre at the City of Oxford College in April.
